Who are you?
My name is Jessica, I’m a juris doctor with a career in law and I live alone with my dog, Atlas, near the base of the mountains next to a large mountain range.
What is your background?
I was a dockhand in Alaska and a maintenance technician for Section 8 housing. I’m a nationally-certified EMT and have worked night shifts in the ER. I’ve also worked the fire line during active burn in my state, and have both scuba diving and forklift certifications.
I have a Bachelor of Science in Economics with an option in Law, Policy, and Economics and a Juris Doctorate. I worked two jobs in high school and then full-time throughout my undergraduate to support myself entirely and graduate without any debt.
Why are you doing this?
I used to live full-time in a camper, and then six years ago I was given an opportunity with this property.
My law studies and lifestyle have inspired me to write a novel, so between projects and work obligations, I am working on bringing that story to life.
I strongly believe that every single person is capable of achieving and learning anything if they are given the right resources. I have learned a lot in my time at the cabin and I enjoy sharing that knowledge. I hope my projects, my travels and my life inspires you to try something new or just provides a moment of peace and respite.
Where do you live?
The property is at the base of a mountain range in the Pacific Northwest on a river, and has a well and septic. I am here full-time, and have been for the past 6 years.
What is your job?
I work in my field (law), but due to the nature of my responsibilities and to protect those I work with, I can’t disclose further.
Why don’t you show your face?
I live alone in the mountains and feel it is a substantial security risk for my privacy and safety. I also believe that what my face looks like, or anyone else’s for that matter, shouldn’t be considered important.
What kind of dog is Atlas?
Atlas is a rescue that I got when he was six months old, and the prior owner had a DNA test done on him that came back 12% Chow Chow, 12% Doberman, 12% Plott Hound, and the rest unknown.
How old is Atlas?
Atlas is seven and half years old.
Where do you get electricity?
Take a look at this YouTube video where I share some of my favorite sources for getting electricity.
Where do you get water?
I’m not connected to a municipal water source, but put together this video to show you how my system works:
Are you completely “off the grid”?
I live entirely off-grid with all but electricity until I can get hydro power in place, and aim to live as sustainably as possible.
Are all your videos taken on your property?
No, I travel for both work and pleasure and enjoy sharing the places I visit.
Is it difficult to live alone in the mountains?
Sometimes. But it’s an intentional choice, and I’m happy with the way Atlas and I live. I have great friends, a professional community and the freedom to travel and explore.
